Today is Ganesh Chaturthi. One of the most important festivals in Marathi calendar.
I think, Ganesha is the most adored God among so many Gods in Hindu culture. He is equally loved and worshipped by adults as well as children.
I am sure, in every house celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi today, Modaks must have been made for Bappa!!  In our family, Ganesh Chaturthi has a dual importance as it is my Dad's birthday as well. So every year my mother used to make two sweets, Modaks for Bappa and some other sweet for Dad. Me being a 'Daddy's girl' since my childhood, this day is surely a very special day for me. So today, I am going to share my Dad's favourite dessert, which is 'Shrikhand'.
Happy Birthday Baba!! This one is for you!!

Ingredients & Recipe-
Yogurt 1 litre
(Thicker the yogurt, creamier will be the Shrikhand. So weight watchers beware)
Sugar 2 cups
 Nutmeg 1/2
Almonds and cashew nuts chopped 3/4 each
Saffron & Pistachios for garnishing
Milk if required

If you want to eat the authentic Shrikhand, you have to be ready to do some preliminaries. Don't worry,it's not that difficult. if you want the Shrikhnd for tomorrow, you have to hang the yogurt overnight. that gives us the perfect 'Hung curd'.
For this, take a muslin cloth and place it over a colander. Pour the yougurt in it.Tie the end of the cloth and hang it over your sink overnight.
Over the night, all the water from the yogurt will drip and you will get the thich hung curd in the morning.
Take this hung curd in a bowl and sugar in it. Blend it with a hand blender. At this stage, if it too thick, you can add some milk to it to adjust the consistency. Now add grated nutmeg and chopped nuts and mix well.
Take it out in a serving bowl and garnish with blanched pistachios and saffron.
It goes really well with  poori & dry potato curry.
Other variations of Shrikhand can be made by adding fruit pulps like mango, strawberry, litchi or gulkand. But my favourite one is the authentic Shrikhand.

About Me

Hello my friends,
Before you all take a look at my blogposts, let me introduce myself to all of you. I am Anjali Deshpande,
born and brought up in India in a Maharashtrian family, now living in the UK.
I am  a busy working Mum of two lovely boys who try their best to keep me busy, but in spite of  that, I have a few hobbies, reading, music and cooking being the most prominent ones!!
Being a daughter of a mother who is an excellent cook, wife of a husband who is a ardent foodie and mum of the children who always want to eat 'Something different', my interest in food has developed by  leaps and bounds over the years. Being in the healthcare profession, the nutritional side of the food is equally as  important to me as the taste aspect. So I try my best  to incorporate as many healthy ingredients in my recipes as I can.
I am a big fan of authentic recipes from any culture. Despite the time and attention required, the end product that comes to our plates is simply irresistible.
In my blog, I am going to include mainly the recipes which are useful for day to day cooking and which are approved by my family. Because when they eat something happily, I am sure that the dish will suit to the taste of other people as well!!
After living in the Europe for more than 12 years now, our palates have got used to many different flavours. In this day and age where our friend circles include people from various corners of the world we can all take a leaf out of other peoples cook books to tantalize our taste buds.

Please feel free to leave suggestions to help improving my blog.
